Sofield Wins Election to Public Works Commission by a Waterslide
GREENVILLE, SC: Deb Sofield won a seat on the Commission of Public Works for the Greenville Water System, her sweeping victory also earning her a spot in city history books.
The long-time Greenville city councilwoman is the first woman to win an election to the Commission since its inception in 1918.
For the past eight years, Sofield served as the mayor’s appointee to the Commission and sought election upon her retirement from the City Council.
The Water Commission had an opening due to the untimely death of Mr. Vardry Ramsuer who served as the chairman for many years. Mr. Bob Howard held the interim position on the Commission until the election took place.
Sofield ran a campaign built on experience, clean water, fair water rates and protecting our water sources. She handedly won the republican primary and then went onto sweep the general election beating her democratic opponent with an almost 2 to 1 margin of victory.

Eurasian and Asian Women Civil Society Leaders Learn Advocacy Skills
Jakarta, Indonesia: — The International Republican Institute’s (IRI) Women’s Democracy Network (WDN) conducted advocacy training for women civil society leaders from Bangladesh, Cambodia, East Timor, Indonesia, Kyrgyz Republic, Malaysia, Moldova and Ukraine in Jakarta, Indonesia from August 28-31, 2007.
The seminar provided training and networking opportunities to both women nongovernmental organization leaders and aspiring leaders. For many participants, this was the first opportunity to engage with their counterparts from a different part of the world and discuss issues than transcend regional boundaries.
Deb Sofield from South Carolina served as trainer for the advocacy skills workshops. In addition to her private business as an executive presentations coach, Sofield was able to convey lessons learned from her work as an elected official on the Greenville City Council. During the two-day seminar, Sofield conducted training sessions on how to more effectively lobby government officials and project planning. As part of the project planning session, working groups drafted sample advocacy project, which they then presented in a mock City Council setting.
The Women’s Democracy Network is an initiative established by IRI to foster relationships among women leaders from around the world, and to provide them with opportunities to share experiences and develop the skills needed for professional advancement. The network encourages and supports women working to advance civic and economic participation in their countries and to create regional networks to strengthen their development.

After being elected to the city council, I was happy to see my photo on the local news. But the glow faded when I wondered if that station had endorsed my opponent. The tip-off? The station’s choice of background music: Cher’s “Gypsies, Tramps & Thieves.”
